A Cascades Christmas
Series: Romancing America
Author: Mildred Colvin, Mary Davis, Debby Lee, Gina Welborn
Head to the majestic Northwest where logging history comes to life in four Christmas romances. Insecurity brings a logger and a young woman together, but will a “perfect” sister tear them apart? Will the dangers of the woods derail a young couple’s hopes and their chance at love? Amid town gossip, can a work-focused sawmiller win the heart of a prim-and-proper heiress? Will second thoughts have a sentimental girl and a hardhearted carpenter losing love? Find the answers in this heartwarming holiday collection.
This was an uplifting and, ultimately, joyful series of holiday stories. The setting and time period are reminiscent of the musical Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Gotta love those lumberjacks. The stories are interconnected and it's wonderful to stay in touch with characters from the previous stories. The men and women in this book are real. They have failings, make mistakes and lose sight of God's will. There's sorrow and regret along the way. What stays with you, however, is the overriding love for each other and for God. These are charming, inspiring and, at times, powerful love stories. It may have been near 100 degrees outside while I read this book but in my heart it was Christmas.
One of the things I enjoyed about this collection is that we get to know the supporting cast throughout all the novellas. Various townspeople drift in and out of the tales, and the previous couples continue to grace later stories with cameo appearances. I’ve also lived in or near logging communities for much of my adult life, so seeing some of the history of this resource in nearby Washington state was interesting to me. If you’re in the mood for a little early Christmas (and by early I mean both early in the season and early in the history of the American west) check out A Cascades Christmas.
